Ingredients
- 1–2 tablespoons Yerba Mate Leaves (Dried)
- 6–8 ounces (180–240 ml) Water
- 1 teaspoon Optional: Honey
- ½ teaspoon Optional: Citrus Juice
- 2–3 leaves Optional: Fresh Mint
Instructions
- Gather your traditional gourd (mate) or heat-safe cup and locate your metal bombilla straw.
- Rinse your gourd or cup with hot water to warm the vessel before preparing your yerba mate recipe, then empty any excess water.
- Fill a kettle with fresh filtered water and heat to approximately 160-180 degrees Fahrenheit, keeping it below boiling point.
- Pour one to two tablespoons of dried yerba mate leaves into your warmed gourd, gently tilting it to a forty-five-degree angle.
- Create a small hollow space in the yerba mate leaves and insert your metal bombilla straw at a slight angle, keeping the filter portion fully submerged.
- Pour the heated water slowly into your gourd along the inside edge where the yerba mate is piled, filling until the water reaches just below the top of the leaves.
- Allow the yerba mate to steep for approximately five minutes until the water turns a golden-green color before taking your first sip.
- Stir in optional honey, fresh citrus juice, or mint leaves if desired, and enjoy slowly through the bombilla straw.
Notes
Chef Tips: Water temperature is critical; using water at a rolling boil will scald the delicate yerba mate leaves and create a bitter, unpleasant taste. Always let your water cool for 2-3 minutes after boiling. Do not rush the 5-minute steeping time to ensure a perfectly balanced flavor profile. Angle your bombilla at forty-five degrees to keep it stable and properly filter out particles. Choose high-quality dried leaves with visible stems for an authentic experience. You can refill your gourd with fresh hot water 3 to 5 times using the same leaves.
